The North Cemetery - Manila, Philippinen

Children playing, dozing adults, food and knickknack kiosks, music floating over the tombs: all this can be found at Manila’s North Cemetery. About 3000 families moved the focal point of their lives to one of the biggest and oldest cemeteries in the city to escape life in the crowded, overflowing slums. To live where the dead rest is normal here, and this form of living has already spread to other cemeteries in Manila, where homeless people finally find something like a home, forming a makeshift community together. The sadness which is deeply rooted within our conception of cemeteries is hardly felt here, bursting as it is with life and relief.
